Secure Wireless Network FAQ:
can anyone tell me detailed instructions on how to secure lock my network so that only my family can use it. its not as fast as i would like it. it could be because my neighbors are catching my signal. try setting a WEP keys on the router. Tell family the WEP key and U are set.
Get out the paperwork on your router, it should be that you type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser and hit enter, this will let you access the Routers Utility and enable you to eneter one of the 3 forms of security.
WEP
WPA
WPA-2 is best
This will protect your network the same as your neighbors. they can see your network but can’t access it.
You can set up your username and password.

Well it is a bit involved, but not hard. If you have a linksys, which seems to be the most common, just visit their site…
linksys.com
And it will tell you step by step how to password protect, or even hide your wireless network.
If you have another brand of wireless router, simply find the manufacturers website. I am sure they will do the same as well.
I have a 3COM wirless 11G, I have secured my network using the encrption method WPA and set a password key,so only my family and any other person has the key will enter my network, and it will appear as secured netwrok to the neighbors.
You didn’t specify which type of router u use, but u must have inside the router setting a wireless network option, then go to inside it and find encryption…choose ur encryption method (usually something like WPA), and set the key or pass….click save or apply, then u are done.
How to actually lock down your wireless network depends on the device, but it can be broken into 5 steps :
1. Download the latest firmware for your device.
2. Change the default administrator password.
3. Change your SSID and turn off SSID Broadcasting
4. Enable WPA-2 (do not use wep it can easily be cracked)
5. Limit access by MAC addresses (this will lock access to the MAC addresses of you network cards)
If you want more specific instructions, I would need to know what wireless router you are using.
I do see you stated you have a linksys, but what model?
If you state the linksys model , I can provide you with detailed instructions if you wish.
