Secure Wireless Network FAQ:

I use Intel/Pro Set wireless on my dell laptop. I have a wireless network with linksys but no password with it. I have tried many times to use a password with it but every time it never goes through. How can I fix this?

You need hardware compatible with your Linksys router that can send a WPA, or WEP, TKIP etc whatever it uses, password between the units; Linksys usually has a pass key generator format, so the encryption is based on a common code, but the algorithm is the same
If you got say a Linksys Wireless card, the setup would allow you to configure the card effectively as a type of “client” of the router.

go to start>run>cmd> ipconfig> find your default gateway ip>

should be 192.168.1.1

go to internet type in

go to wireless tab then go to security

click wireless security then click drop down menu
go to wpa (if you use wireless devices like a ds or psp then click wep)

enter a password you will remember and click save changes.

at this point you will probibly lose internet then go to start>connect to>
wireless network connection> click view

click your router name should be linksys then enter password then click next then go to start>rin>cmd>ipconfig(space)/renew

Iam going to list the 5 most important things you should do after you set up. 1) Make Connection Secure: Securing the wireless Internet connection means to use some encryption on data and use of password authentication to access the Wireless Internet. Go To “Security Options” on your router control page and make the connection secure. This interface may vary from brand to brand but the concept is more or less the same.I recommend WPA or WPA2, along with a strong pass-phrase or password. A good password will be one which has a mix of upper-lowercase and special characters. After you make these changes on your Router you have to make corresponding changes on your Laptop or Desktops which access this Router to use same encryption settings and same password. 2) Disable :SSID Broadcast. Disabling the SS ID broadcast is like making the router silent, it will not tell anyone the router is around unless someone tries to call its name(or IP address) To Disable SSID go to the control page of your router, Look for SSID broadcast option and simply disable it 3) Enable Firewall On Router If Availabe :Some Routers have built in firewall options, if thats available, turn it on,it will help secure you from being hacked even if someone gets to access your network without your permission. 4) Change Administrator Password: its important to change the Administrator Password of your router, becase certain brands of routers have certain default username password sets that hackers know very well, so if they get to your network, and you still have the default passwords set, they can steal your important data. For this look for some set password/change password option on your router control page,5) Turn-Off Router When Not In Use : Not only does it save on your power bills, but also , will help keep it secure. Hope you find these tips useful
