Secure Wireless Network FAQ:

We have comcast digital internet and we bought a wireless router. I think that someone around us is using our wireless network and it’s making our internet soooo slow. How can I make it secure or private?
If it matters, it’s a D-Link!

login to the router
192.168.0.1

username
password

Add a security key to the wireless and a name
that way only people in the house know the name and the key and you can hide it

Log into the access point’s web page and enable WPA encryption. You’ll need to put the same details into your computers that connect or you will be locked out.

It is very important to secure your wireless as you can be susceptible to being hacked and paying for other peoples downloads. I would suggest you place a security encryption code on your system. I had to have it done by a computer expert and I rec commend you do the same. Good luck!

You don’t need to install the software to secure your wireless network. Log into your router by going to 192.168.1.1 in your browser’s address bar. Type in your user credentials (the default is username: blank password: admin). Go to the wireless tab and select WPA security; don’t bother with WEP as it is much inferior than WPA. Once you have typed in your password, hit apply and your router should reset itself. You won’t be able to connect to your router now because it’s wirelessly secured now. On your laptop, go to the wireless security setting and select WPA. Then type in your WPA password.

I didn’t explain everything in detail, so if you don’t understand something, just consult with this guide

Yeah, the D-Link could be your problem, its not a top of the line wireless router. In general, routers themselves have a built in fire wall. If someone is using your signal, you do not have your security enabled, which essentially makes your house a free public network.

Pending on your router there may be a button with either a key or a lock on it – press it. If you do not have that feature go into your control panel on your computer and go to wireless networt setup. You should have an option to select where your connection is, and also to password enable connection access. The next step that you should do is in the control panel as well. Go to windows firewall (assuming your a PC user) and click “turn on windows firewall”. That sould be a fair start without purchasing a physical fire wall.

Go to your wired computer, and type in “192.168.0.1″ (without the quotes) and then enter your username and password. If you’ve never set up a username and password for this router before, the default should be:

Username: “admin” or leave it blank…not sure which one it should be.
Password: “password”

Next, you need to navigate to your wireless section, which should be there on the opening page on the left hand side. You can then enable WPA, and enter a password. This password will have to be known by all computers that connect to your router.

Go to your wireless computer, connect to your network. It will now ask for for the network password, enter it, and you’re ready to go. Now any computer that wants to connect to your network will have to know this password. And now no one can steal your bandwidth! =)
