Secure Wireless Network FAQ:

I’ll be staying at my sister’s house and taking my laptop. I will need to connect to her wireless network but it is secured. If she gives me the password, can I enter it and then be able to get online?

As long as you have the password or the WEP key then you can get on with your wireless connection.

Yep, you just need the WEP or WAP pass key and your laptop will be able to establish a wireless connection with the wifi router.

Yeppers!

The wonders of wireless. All you’ll need to do, is enter the product key when you try to connect to the secured wireless network. Then the computer will connect simple and easy.

Yes, you can. That’s the whole point of a secure network. You can let anyone use it that you want, but everyone else is out of luck.

you will likely need to enter the ssid or esid which will be in her connection

yup. click the little computer thing on the bottom right that has the wireless antenna or radio waves on it, click the search button, and then select her wireless network, and put in the password.

Yes. If the connection is passworded or firewalled, as long as your laptop has a wireless network card installed, and you have the password, you should be able to connect to their network.

Yes you will be able to. Once you turn your laptop on, it should recognise a new wireless network. You can then click on this network connection and it will ask you to click connect – once you have clicked connect – it will after a few seconds ask you to enter the WPA key which is the password to the network.

This is not a simple question to answer.

It really depends upon how securely it was actually set up.

If it was properly set up, and all security and validation was installed as it should have been done, then the answer is “no” you need more than the secure password.

Most people do not set their network up using all the security options they have available to themselves – and this leaves them vulnerable (and very exposed to risk).

The best way to find out is to try.

As long as they give you the WEP password, no problem.
